The Man United legend offers advice to Luke Shaw about his Old Trafford career
Phil Neville believes Luke Shaw could become the Premier League’s best left-back but warned the England defender that he needs to prove his desire to succeed at Manchester United.
The 22-year-old hasn’t made a Premier League appearance for Jose Mourinho’s side in the 2017-18 season but has made two substitute appearances in the League Cup.
Shaw moved to Manchester United as one of the division’s most-exciting prospects in a £27m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The England international was in and out of the first-team under Louis van Gaal before he suffered a double leg break at PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in September 2015.
Shaw made 11 appearances in the Premier League last season in a difficult first season under Mourinho as the ex Chelsea boss regularly criticised the left-back.
The former Saints full-back made 22 appearances in all competitions despite Manchester United winning the League Cup and the Europa League to raise questions about his future at Old Trafford.
Neville challenged Shaw to prove his desire to turnaround his Manchester United career under Mourinho.
“I hope he does (prove himself at Man United). I really do. He has unbelievable ability,” Neville told Sky Sports. “He needs to start showing it. I saw him in the League Cup.”
“He didn’t seem a player that proved to me that he absolutely wanted to die to get this Manchester United shirt. That’s the type of effort he needs to put in.
“He is fourth or fifth choice left-back. He is probably the best left back in the country in terms of potential.”
Shaw has made 49 appearances in all competitions during his four seasons at Old Trafford so far.
The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Huddersfield Town in the Premier League last weekend.
