Mark Lawrenson has admitted that he is worried about Manchester United’s “lack of fight” in recent weeks ahead of the visit of Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult October so far following Manchester United’s goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield before an unconvincing 1-0 loss to Portuguese side Benfica in the Champions League.
The 20-time English champions suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to promoted side Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium last weekend to leave Manchester United five points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.
Manchester United made a brilliant start to the Premier League season following a run of six victories and one stalemate before Jose Mourinho put the handbrake on their impressive performances with a negative display at Anfield.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Manchester United’s attitude last weekend should be of concern to Mourinho ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford.
“I was at United’s defeat at Huddersfield last week and the worrying thing for me about it was that Mourinho’s side had no fight about them in the first half,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
He added: “It was a horrible day in the wind and rain and, to begin with, the Terriers were the only team that turned up. They got really tight on United and, apart from David de Gea in goal, no-one performed for them – they were like the invisible team.”
But then they lost at Huddersfield and if they fall over again here then they could be eight points behind City, who go to West Brom on Saturday.
Manchester United are looking to win their first Premier League title since 2013 but the Red Devils are already facing an uphill battle of overhauling Manchester City.
The Red Devils signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
Manchester United finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last term.
