Pat Nevin: I felt sorry for this Man United star at Newcastle
The Chelsea legend admits he felt sorry for Nemanja Matic in Manchester United's 1-0 loss at Newcastle earlier this month
Pat Nevin has admitted that he felt sorry for Nemanja Matic during Manchester United’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle United last weekend.
The Serbia international has struggled like the rest of his Manchester United team-mates in recent weeks.
Matic has been partnering Paul Pogba in a two-man midfielder but the Manchester United duo struggled in losses to Newcastle and Tottenham.
The 29-year-old has been tasked with taking on extra defensive duties given the club record signing’s failure to protect his back four.
Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin expressed his sympathy for the Serbian midfielder following Manchester United’s latest Premier League setback.
“I felt sorry for Matic,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk. “He was basically on his own. I looked around the Man United team.
“Sanchez was quiet. Lukaku was quiet. Lingard unusually so. Martial was in a huff with himself. They looked like a bunch of individuals.
“They didn’t look like a team.”
Matic completed a surprise £40m move to Manchester United from defending Premier League champions Chelsea last summer.
The Serbian midfielder has reinforced Mourinho’s team with his ability to play in a holding role in front of the Red Devils back four.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but just two points ahead of Liverpool FC.
