Nemanja Matic is confident Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title if Jose Mourinho’s men can maintain their current performance level.

The Red Devils made the breakthrough against Tottenham Hotspur in the 81st minute thanks to Anthony Martial’s fourth Premier League goal of the 2017-18 season.

Martial’s late goal sealed a 1-0 victory over Spurs and secured Manchester United’s fifth successive Premier League win at Old Trafford in the current campaign.

Manchester United had come under criticism in recent weeks following a disappointing goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield before a surprise 2-1 loss to promoted side Huddersfield Town.

However, the Red Devils bounced back with a close-fought 1-0 win against Tottenham to take their points tally to 23 ahead of Manchester City’s clash at West Brom.

Matic, who moved to Manchester United in a £40m deal from defending champions Chelsea, talked up the Red Devils’ title challenge after a 1-0 win against Spurs.

“They had more of the ball in the first half but we had more chances than them,” Matic told Sky Sports.

“They play great football but it’s the result that matters in the end. If we continue like this we can challenge for the title.”

Matic won the Premier League title on two occasions during his Chelsea career under Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte.

Manchester United haven’t won the top-flight crown since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson got his hands on his 13th Premier League trophy.

The Red Devils signed Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Matic in the summer.
