Phil Neville: Why I wasn’t surprised Man United lost at Huddersfield

The Manchester United legend believes the Red Devils have struggled since returning from the international break

Phil Neville insists there were signs that Manchester Untied were going to lose at Huddersfield Town following some poor performances since the international break.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to the promoted side at the John Smith Stadium on Saturday afternoon after Aaron Mooy broke the deadlock in the 28th minute before Laurent Depoitre extended the home side’s lead five minutes later.

Manchester United halved the deficit with 10 minutes to go when Marcus Rashford finished from close range following Romelu Lukaku’s cross to offer the Premier League title contenders some late hope.

The 20-time English champions are five points behind current Premier League leaders Manchester City after a defensive performance in a goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield in their first game since the international break.

Manchester United were unconvincing 1-0 winners at Portuguese side Benfica last week to secure their third successive Champions League win.

Former Red Devils defender Neville believes Mourinho’s side were due to suffer their first Premier League defeat following a dip in their performances since the return of club football after the international break.

“It was a poor, poor performance. I think this performance was coming all week,” Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They were disappointing at Anfield. They didn’t set the world on fire at Benfica. They looked like a team that could challenge for the title before the international break.

“They’ve come back from the international break that look they’re a top-four team at best.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League last term.

The Red Devils won the League Cup and the Europa League last season.
