Man United stars told they must help summer singning

The Southampton legend believes Manchester United need to improve their supply of chances to Romelu Lukaku

Matt Le Tissier believes it is up to Manchester United to create chances for Romelu Lukaku to score in their big Premier League games this season.

The Belgium international completed a £75m move to Old Trafford from their Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window after he opted to move to Manchester United ahead of a return to Chelsea.

Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last term but the Belgian forward continues to contend with the stigma that he struggles in high-octane Premier League games.

The 24-year-old helped to fuel the myth with a disappointing performance in a goalless draw with Liverpool earlier this month as Lukaku continued his barren run at Anfield.

Lukaku scored six times in six games before his return to Merseyside but Manchester United failed to create chances for their summer signing, who was often left isolated from his team-mates.

Former Southampton captain Le Tissier believes Manchester United need to ensure the supply of chances is frequent to allow Lukaku to leave his mark in big games ahead of the visit of title rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford this weekend.

“I don’t really go with the idea that Lukaku can’t score in big games,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports.

“For me it is more about the amount of chances created for him.

“Their games against Liverpool are a good example, with Kane having seven shots, scoring twice, whereas Lukaku had just the one effort.”

Manchester United lost 2-1 to Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium last weekend.
