Manchester United caught Chelsea out with their late swoop for Romelu Lukaku, according to John Cross

Manchester United caught Chelsea out with their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku, according to journalist John Cross.
Widespread reports linking Manchester United with a move for Lukaku emerged in the British media on Thursday amid claims that the Red Devils had agreed a fee for the 24-year-old striker.
Lukaku had been heavily linked with a move back to Chelsea before news of Manchester United’s apparent interest in the player surfaced this week.
And Daily Mirror reporter Cross claimed the move was a “done deal” on Thursday night and suggested that Chelsea had been caught out by Manchester United’s surprise move.
Cross wrote on Twitter: “All systems go. Man United have caught Chelsea on the hop. Lukaku to Old Trafford now a done deal.”
Manchester United are set to jet out to the United States for their pre-season tour on Sunday as Jose Mourinho links up with his squad ahead of his second campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are preparing for a return to the Champions League next season after they finished sixth but won the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign at the club.
Manchester United also won the Community Shield and EFL Cup in Mourinho’s first season at the club.
