Owen Hargreaves praised Marouane Fellaini after the Belgian forward came off the bench to help fire Manchester United to a 2-0 victory over Leicester City to continue their fine start to the new season.

After a goalless first half, Romelu Lukaku missed the chance to put the hosts in front when he saw his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

However, the Red Devils continued to dominate possession and they eventually took the lead when Marcus Rashford powered home from a corner.

And fellow substitute Fellaini then made the points secure when he fired home after good work from Jesse Lingard on the left wing.

The victory kept Manchester United flying high at the top of the Premier League table after claiming three wins from their opening three games.

“He always has a big impact off the bench, Fellaini,” Hargreaves said on BT Sport. “For Mourinho, he’s a favourite.

“He certainly had an impact on this game. It was good patience from Jesse Lingard and Fellaini just managed to get a touch.”

Reacting to Rashford’s earlier opener, Hargreaves said: “They kept coming all evening and dominated possession. They had a big chance on the penalty that they didn’t take.

“It’s a lovely flighted ball in from Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Rashford was unmarked. It wasn’t a clean touch but it was enough. You just wonder whether Kasper Schmeichel could have done better.”

Manchester United will now return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday 9 September after the international break.
