Gary Neville is hoping that Luke Shaw will be able to fulfil his potential at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

The England left-back’s situation at Old Trafford has been a source of debate in recent days after he has seemingly failed to win the trust of manager Jose Mourinho.

Shaw’s situation was once again thrown into the spotlight last weekend when he was substituted at half-time during Manchester United’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

It remains to be seen whether the 22-year-old features in Mourinho’s long-term plans at Old Trafford or whether the Portuguese coach will choose to move Shaw on.

However, former Manchester United defender Neville has insisted that he would like to see Shaw given the chance to prove himself properly at Old Trafford as he believes strongly in his ability.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “What I would say about Shaw is that the talent and ability are there, but his job as a footballer is to be prepared to perform every day and do every single thing in his life well to be a United player.

“At the moment, his potential is not being recognised. I’ve got a great belief in Luke Shaw and the reality is it would be a great shame if he leaves United without fulfilling his potential.

“There’s a lot of players out there with less ability but maximising their potential and I just hope he can get there.”

Shaw will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action after the international break next weekend with a home clash against Swansea City.

The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table as they look to book their place in the Champions League for next season.
