Jose Mourinho explains his decision to make Paul Pogba captain for Man United on Friday night

Jose Mourinho believes that Paul Pogba was the right man to captain Manchester United in the absence of Antonio Valencia.
The French midfielder was handed the armband for the Red Devils’ Premier League opener against Leicester City on Friday night and he repaid his manager’s faith by putting in a solid shift and scoring a penalty in the 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
Valencia was not available for Friday’s game and Mourinho insisted that Pogba was the obvious choice to take the armband for the Premier League opener.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports before the game, Mourinho said: “Antonio Valencia is the captain but he is not here so Paul Pogba is captain.
“He has come up through the academy and he knows what the club means.”
Pogba will be hoping to find some consistent form for Manchester United this season as he bids to help the Red Devils challenge for the Premier League title.
Manchester United ended up second and without a trophy last season in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge.
The Red Devils, who have not won the title since 2013, brought in Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant in the summer transfer window ahead of the new campaign.
Manchester United will take on Brighton in their next Premier League game next weekend.
