Jose Mourinho has dismissed concerns about Marcus Rashford’s lack of game-time at Manchester United this season, especially in the wake of Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at the club.

The England international has found his opportunities in the starting line-up to be somewhat restricted this term, with the youngster having only started 13 games in the Premier League ahead of the clash against Crystal Palace.

There have been growing concerns that Rashford’s opportunities could be further restricted at Old Trafford after Manchester United signed Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

However, Mourinho has insisted that is not the case and says it is up to the player himself to prove himself as worthy of a regular spot in the team.

Speaking at a news conference before Monday night’s clash against Palace, Mourinho said: “There is not one single match when Marcus is not selected to start or to be on the bench. When I see you sometimes put in doubt if he is going to be selected for the World Cup or not be selected.

“You know, if the national coach trusts him, he selects him. It doesn’t matter if he plays or doesn’t play.

“There are many examples of players who don’t play for their clubs at all and they go to the national teams.

“You have the example of (Sergio) Romero, who is the second goalkeeper at Manchester United and the first goalkeeper for such an amazing football country like Argentina.

“In your own country, you have examples of players who play even without scoring a goal in the Premier League.

“So, it’s up to Gareth Southgate. If he trusts him, he selects him. It doesn’t matter if he plays or if he doesn’t play for Manchester United.”

Manchester United are aiming to at least finish in the top four this season after they ended up in a disappointing sixth place last term.

However, Mourinho was able to steer the Red Devils into the Champions League this season by guiding his side to Europa League glory last term.

Manchester United have not won the Premier League since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
