Phil Neville criticised Manchester United’s players for doing the “worst thing” and not showing enough desire against Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Red Devils slumped to a surprise 2-1 loss to the newly-promoted team on Saturday afternoon as they were comprehensively beaten for the first time in the Premier League this season.

Jose Mourinho publicly questioned the attitude of his players after the defeat as the Red Devils struggled against the Terriers.

And former Manchester United defender Neville was not at all impressed by the desire shown by the Red Devils and their attitude during Saturday’s defeat.

Speaking on Match of the Day on BBC Sport on Saturday, Neville said: “Huddersfield deserved to win – Jose Mourinho was right.

“I think it’s been coming this week – the performance at Anfield, the performance against Benfica in midweek even though they won.

“They [Manchester United] haven’t been good this week and they’ve lost the momentum that they had before the international break.

“When a manager questions your desire, your attitude and your motivation – I think that’s the worst thing for a Manchester United player.

“Huddersfield wanted it more than Manchester United.

“They were aggressive, they got to the ball, every time they won the ball they broke into attack, they hunted in packs with great intensity and United just didn’t fancy it today.”

Manchester United will have to quickly dust themselves down as they look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon with a crunch clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Saturday’s surprise defeat left Mourinho’s men five points behind leaders Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title this season.

Manchester United are aiming to win the title for the first time since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in the 2012-13 campaign.
