Gary Neville blasts Man United players after 1-0 loss at Newcastle United
Gary Neville has his say on Man United's 1-0 loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday
Gary Neville has accused Manchester United’s players of failing to prevent the game from “drifting away” from them after their 1-0 loss to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
After a goalless and largely uninspiring first half, Steve Bruce’s Newcastle side took the lead in the 72nd minute when Matty Longstaff fired home a low shot past David De Gea to net on his Premier League debut.
Manchester United struggled to have much impact as they tried to find an equaliser in the closing stages.
And they were not able to find a goal as they ended up slumping to their third Premier League defeat of the season.
The result will heap further pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose side are now 12th in the table and a staggering 15 points behind leaders Liverpool FC.
And former Red Devils defender Neville was not at all impressed by what he saw from Solskjaer’s side on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Manchester United legend Neville said: “It’s a mirror of the West Ham game.
“When you don’t grab games by the scruff of the neck in the first half and you let games drift, you’re always susceptible to a goal.
“When the goal goes in, the game can just come away from you and that’s what’s happened for Manchester United.
“They’re not ruthless and clinical. They don’t see the danger of the game drifting every five minutes.
“They think they’re OK in games, but they’re not.”
Manchester United will have to reflect on the result during the international break, and they will have to dust themselves down before they welcome Liverpool FC to Old Trafford in their next Premier League game later this month.
The Red Devils are now without a win in five games in all competitions.
