Paul Merson has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to resit the temptation to throw Mason Greenwood into the starting line-up at Manchester United this season.

The Red Devils have seen their options up front take a hit after Marcus Rashford picked up an injury during Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to West Ham United at the weekend.

Anthony Martial is still working on his fitness levels as he bids to try and return to action before Manchester United host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Greenwood, 17, scored in the Europa League for Manchester United last week and could well feature when the Red Devils take on Rochdale in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

However, former Arsenal star Merson doesn’t want to see Greenwood rushed into the first team too soon at Old Trafford.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Merson said: “I hope – I know this won’t sound right – the young kid doesn’t get a chance, Greenwood,

“I think he’s a good player, I think he’s going to be special. You don’t want to be putting a young kid into a bad team.

“When you’re a centre forward, you’re only as good as the service you get. If you ain’t getting the service, you ain’t scoring the goals I don’t care who you are.

“Not just his confidence, everything. The pressure is going to be on him. The fan’s are going to be saying, “Oh Greenwood’s in”, Solskjaer’s already said he’s one of the best finishers he’s seen.

“You watch Manchester United, there’s not a plan. You watch other teams play, there’s a plan. Manchester United just seem to fall over it.

“I just hope the kid don’t get in when the team are playing poorly because I think this lad is going to be special.”

Manchester United will take on Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday night as they bid to get back to winning ways following their 2-0 loss to West Ham last weekend.

The Red Devils are aiming to try and break back into the top four this season after they finished sixth and without a trophy last term.
