Paul Merson has talked up Anthony Martial’s importance to Manchester United following his return to action for the Red Devils.

Martial has missed a large portion of the current campaign due to injury but he has recently return to action for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The 23-year-old has only started four of Manchester United’s 10 Premier League games so far this season but he scored in the Red Devils’ important 3-1 win against Norwich City last weekend.

Martial will now be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Old Trafford as he bids to help Manchester United reignite their top-four hopes this season.

Despite his lack of playing time in the Premier League this season, Martial has scored three goals and made one assist in five top-flight games for the Red Devils.

And former Arsenal star Merson has talked up the importance of Martial to the current team at Old Trafford.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “Anthony Martial is a top player, he’s better than a lot of the players they’ve got.

“If you’re the manager, you’re always going to hope a player like him is coming back into the team.

“On his day, he can rip anybody apart and if you get him and Marcus Rashford playing, they’re going to hurt teams and fly up the table but it’s all about consistency and they’ve got to put in performances like they did against Liverpool every week.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime when they travel to Bournemouth in the top flight looking for their fourth league win of the season.

The Red Devils area aiming to try and break back into the top four this season after they finished sixth and without a trophy last term.
