Paul Merson warns Man United against sacking Jose Mourinho this season
Paul Merson has warned Manchester United against sacking Jose Mourinho despite the Red Devils’ stuttering form.
The Portuguese coach has found himself under intense pressure at Old Trafford in recent days after his Manchester United side slumped to back to back defeats by Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur.
Those losses left Manchester United six points off the pace in the race for the Premier League title and they have heaped further pressure on Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s patchy form has inevitably led to speculation about Mourinho’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
However, Arsenal legend Merson has warned the Red Devils that they would be “silly” to let Mourinho go just because of a blip in form.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “Who are they going to get if Jose goes? I think they’d be silly to sack him, it’d be terrible but you’ve seen it before and I’ve seen it at Chelsea.
“If it can happen there, and he’s won the league, why can’t it happen at Man United where he hasn’t?
“He’s going to feel the pressure, he’s not going to be happy, he’s a serial winner. He’s going to get the hump.
“It’s going to be a hard season for them. The problem is not just Man City running away from them, it’s also looking at Liverpool and thinking how have they got all these players and we haven’t?
“They’re one of the biggest teams in the world, I’d say, and look at teams like Tottenham and Liverpool who aren’t blessed with a lorry-load of money, and look at the players they’ve bought.
“How many Manchester United players would get in the Liverpool team? How has that happened? That’s the problem.”
Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Burnley in the top flight.
The Red Devils are aiming to get themselves back in contention for the title this season, as Manchester United have not won the Premier League since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
