Paul Pogba has admitted that Manchester United need to step their game up after their “disrespectful” performance in their 4-0 loss to Everton at the weekend.

The Red Devils produced a dire performance at Goodison Park as they slumped to a disappointing defeat by the Toffees to further dent their hopes of a top-four finish this season.

Manchester United currently find themselves outside of the top-four places in the Premier League and with an uphill battle on their hands to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have now lost six of their last eight games in all competitions and it is far from the perfect run ahead of their crunch clash with derby rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

And France midfielder Pogba has admitted that he and his team-mates were not good enough in their defeat by the Toffees at the weekend.

Speaking in an interview quoted by BBC Sport, Pogba said: “The way we played and the performance of myself, of the team, of everyone is disrespectful.

“Everything went wrong, but the mentality on the pitch has to change.”

Manchester United will now try to regroup as they prepare to take on their bitter local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Pogba continued: “The fans want a reaction from the players and the only way to apologise to them is to give everything on the pitch.

“That’s how we should apologise to the fans, just to give everything for the club, for the shirt, for the team-mates and for ourselves because we can’t perform like we did.

“We can lose games, but with a good performance and pride. When you wear this shirt, you have to work and respect the culture, the history of this club and give everything.

“We didn’t respect ourselves, the club or the fans. What we did on the pitch is not respectful for the team-mates, for the staff, for the people, for the kit man, for everyone.”

Manchester United have been left only playing for a top-four finish this season after they were dumped out of the Champions League by FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals this month.
