Shaka Hislop has admitted his surprise at Jose Mourinho’s suggestion that it isn’t the club’s responsibility to get the best out of Paul Pogba at Manchester United.
The French midfielder’s situation at Old Trafford has been a constant source of debate in recent months due to his mixed form for Manchester United last season.
However, Pogba earned rave reviews for his strong displays for France at this summer’s World Cup in Russia as he helped Didier Deschamps’ side to win the title.
Comparisons have inevitably been made between Pogba’s form for club and country, but Mourinho has suggested that the midfielder must treat each Manchester United game with the same intensity he showed at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
And former goalkeeper Hislop has admitted his surprise at Mourinho’s latest comments about the French midfielder.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN FC, Hislop said: “I’ve never heard a manager say it isn’t the club’s responsibility to get the best out of a player.
“When has that ever been said before? I never thought I hear any manager let alone one of managers of the biggest clubs in the world say that.
“Amazingly, Conte and Allegri were able to get the best out of Pogba. So much so they took Pogba from being a free transfer to a £100m player. That’s what managers are there for. ”
Manchester United will be looking to challenge for the Premier League title next season as they bid to try and lift the title for the first time since 2013.
The Red Devils finished in second place in the table and without a trophy last term in what was Mourinho’s second campaign in charge of the club.
