Paul Pogba has admitted that he was “honoured” to be handed the captain’s armband for Manchester United during the 2-1 win over Leicester City on Friday.
Pogba captained the Red Devils as he helped Jose Mourinho’s men get their Premier League season off to a positive start in front of their home fans at Old Trafford.
The French midfielder netted from the penalty spot to help Manchester United on their way towards victory, before Luke Shaw’s first ever career goal made the points secure.
Pogba’s situation at Old Trafford has been a constant source of speculation this summer, with the French midfielder having been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old was criticised for not producing consistent performances for Manchester United last season as they ended up second and without a trophy.
However, he was in fine form as he helped France to win the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Pogba was handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Antonio Valencia on Friday, and the midfielder admitted his delight at leading the Red Devils.
Speaking in an interview with MUTV after the game, Pogba said: “It’s always a pleasure for me, an honour to wear this armband.
“A lot of big players for story of the club [have had it]. It’s something great.
“To win today was most important. I scored a penalty, I’m very happy and really happy we started with a win.”
Manchester United will be aiming to challenge for the title this season after they finished second and without a trophy last term.
