Rio Ferdinand hailed a positive performance from Luke Shaw after the defender was given a rare start in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The defender played the full 90 minutes at Old Trafford as Manchester United secured their place in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition as group winners.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in the second half secured the victory for Manchester United after Alan Dzagoev had given the visitors a surprise lead before the break.

Shaw has struggled to win over manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United since his appointment in May 2016 and his start against the Russian side on Tuesday night was his first of the season.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was encouraged to see Shaw back in the starting line-up on Tuesday and was pleased by the left-back’s display.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, ex-defender Ferdinand said: “He had some great moments, especially in the first half.

“One of his main attributes is his pace and he used it very well. But he got caught out for the goal.

“When he’s fit, there’s no doubt this guy’s got huge potential.”

Manchester United now turn their attentions towards their crunch Premier League clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils head into that game in second place in the table and eight points behind Pep Guardiola’s Premier League leaders.
