Rio Ferdinand believes that it is crucial that Manchester United develop a strong central defensive partnership to support their Premier League title challenge this season.

The Red Devils started with Eric Bailly and Phil Jones in central defence on Saturday as Manchester United claimed an impressive victory over Leicester City to keep their Premier League title challenge on track.

Manchester United have struggled to mount a genuine challenge for the title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement at the end of the 2012-13 campaign.

And former Manchester United defender Ferdinand reckons that it is absolutely crucial that the Red Devils are able to enjoy stability at the back throughout the course of the season.

Speaking on BT Sport after Saturday’s win, Ferdinand said: “At centre-half, they haven’t had a consistent pairing for a number of years now.

“To win any type of big trophy, you need players that are there week in, week out, forming a partnership.

“There’s been too much chopping and changing for a real partnership to form.”

Manchester United will now return to action when they take on Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday 9 September after the international break.

The Red Devils will take on Benfica, Basel and CSKA Moscow in the group stage of the Champions League after the draw was made in Monaco last week.

Manchester United sealed their place in Europe’s elite club competition thanks to their Europa League triumph in Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge last term.
