Gary Neville has criticised Romelu Lukaku for his performance for Manchester United in Saturday’s goalless draw with Liverpool.

It ended up being a frustrating afternoon for the Belgian striker as he failed to find the net against Jurgen Klopp’s men on Merseyside.

Lukaku did have a great chance to put Manchester United ahead in the first half but his low effort was well-saved by Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal.

The striker has been in impressive form since his transfer to Manchester United from Everton in the summer transfer window.

However, he was unable to prevent his side from drawing a blank at Anfield as Jose Mourinho’s men had to settle for a point.

And former Manchester United defender Neville was not at all impressed by Lukaku’s performance at Anfield for the Red Devils.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Neville said: “I was disappointed with Lukaku, I was disappointed in him and I have to say that.

“But it’s a tough place to come, it’s a really tough place to come.

“It looked like he was distracted in the first-half, he wasn’t himself, he was frustrated. He really didn’t get any impact in the game, no influence.

“It’s the big matches that will define him as a Manchester United striker, not the matches where he sort of bullies teams.

“He’s a Manchester United centre-forward, there are high expectations of what you’ve got to do in games, big games, win games.

“He’s done that already this season and he’s taken all the praise, he’s had a brilliant start to his Manchester United career.

“But, on a game like today, that’s a game where you really are judged.

“I didn’t think his influence was good enough.”

Lukaku will be hoping to find his scoring boots once again when the Red Devils return to Champions League action on Wednesday night with a trip to Benfica.

Manchester United are aiming to win the Premier League title for the first time this season since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
