Sean Longstaff told to forget about transfer to Man United
Sean Longstaff should forget about the speculation linking him with Man United, says Steve Bruce
Sean Longstaff has been told to forget about the speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United and focus on his performances for Newcastle United by his manager Steve Bruce.
The midfielder was heavily linked with a transfer to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considered bringing him to Old Trafford.
However, despite the newspaper talk, a transfer failed to materialise and Longstaff ended up staying at St James’ Park.
It remains to be seen whether there will be fresh speculation about the midfielder heading into the January transfer window.
However, Magpies boss Bruce has now advised the midfielder to focus on his performances on the pitch for the Red Devils and put the summer speculation out of his mind.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Mirror, Bruce said: “I think Sean now needs to concentrate on his own performances, rather than worrying about speculation and tittle-tattle.
“I don’t think there was any real legs in the Manchester United story.
“Whether there was interest, I’ve never really asked the question.
“Distracted? You are a young lad, so you are going to be. He’s got to learn to put that aside and just get on with the job in hand, which is playing for us.
“I do believe he signed a new contract last Christmas. There is no problem there contract-wise.
“The thing for him now is to forget about contracts, forget his knee injury, forget Man United – it’s all about getting back to playing like we know he is capable.”
The 21-year-old only made his Premier League debut for Newcastle United on Boxing Day last season.
Manchester United will return to Premier League action after the international break with a crunch home clash against table-toppers Liverpool FC.
The Red Devils are aiming to try and break back into the top four this season after they finished sixth and without a trophy last term.
