Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he was delighted by Fred’s performance in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

The Brazilian has been made to wait for his first-team opportunities this season but he played the full 90 minutes on Sunday at Old Trafford as he helped the Red Devils to claim an important three points.

Fred has only started five Premier League games for the Red Devils so far this season but the 26-year-old will now be hoping to hold down a more regular spot in the first team in the coming weeks and months.

He has made one assist in a total of 12 games in all competitions this term, nine of which he has played from the start.

Solskjaer says he was pleased by what he saw from Fred on Sunday afternoon as the Red Devils claimed a much-needed win in the Premier League.

Speaking to Manchester United’s website, Solskjaer said: “You get confidence from playing games.

“He [Fred] has not really had a run of games and I think he set us up with his midfield play.

“He won the ball. We had to get after them because, with [Davy] Propper and [Dale] Stephens in midfield, we couldn’t let them get on the ball and I thought Fred was maybe the catalyst.

“Maybe there were a couple of fouls he shouldn’t have made in the first half to give them chances because that was one of the big opportunities they had, from set-plays.

“But, otherwise, he was excellent.”

Manchester United will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Sheffield United away from home.

The Red Devils are currently down in seventh place in the Premier League table and nine points adrift of the top four after 12 games of the new campaign.
