Steven Gerrard admits that he has been impressed by Marouane Fellaini’s impressive form under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United this season.

The Belgium midfielder earned plenty of praise for his displays for the Red Devils in recent weeks and he scored twice as Manchester United thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Fellaini joined the Red Devils as David Moyes’ only signing in the summer of 2013 and he has proved himself to be a useful player for Premier League outfit.

And former Liverpool captain Gerrard has given the lowdown on what it was like playing against Fellaini during his time at Anfield.

Speaking on BT Sport on Saturday night, Gerrard said: “He’s horrible [to play against], a handful.

“Even when he was at Everton, he used to play a bit further forward and back in. He’d get flick ons and hold the ball up.

“The key here is that the manager [Mourinho] loves him. He’s always going on record and praised him. He’s been quite clever as keeping him as a Plan B.

“Sometimes you can try all of the class and all the nice bits – but sometimes you need to go ugly and be direct.

“He’s certainly Manchester United’s Plan B and he’s very effective.”

Manchester United are second in the Premier League table and level on points with leaders Manchester City as they look to try and win the title this season.

The Red Devils return to Premier League action after the international break with a crunch clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday 14 October.

Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge in the 2012-13 campaign.

Mourinho’s men finished sixth in the Premier League but won both the Europa League and League Cup last term.
