Michael Owen warned Manchester United that finishing second in their Champions League group could mean a very tricky draw in the last 16 after they lost 2-1 to Valencia on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were disappointing in the first half and they fell behind in the 17th minute when Carlos Soler netted the opener.

A Phil Jones own goal at the start of the second half made matters worse for Jose Mourinho’s men in Spain.

However, the introductions of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard in the second half seemed to galvanise Mourinho’s men somewhat.

And Rashford pulled a goal back for the Red Devils in the 87th minute in Spain.

But it was too little too late, as Manchester United ended up slumping to what was a disappointing defeat to leave them second behind Juventus in Group H.

Speaking to BT Sport immediately after the final whistle, Owen said: “I thought it was a different game once Rashford and Lingard came on.

“Rashford scored a cracker and if the game had continued, you could have seen them nicking a draw.

“But overall it was a disappointing game. They did their job earlier in the group. The only problem is that finishing second, it’s likely it could be a tricky draw in the next round.”

The defeat was not ideal preparation for Manchester United’s crunch showdown with Liverpool FC at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

It has been a stop-start campaign for the Red Devils, with Mourinho’s men having struggled to find consistent form.

They trail leaders Liverpool FC by 16 points ahead of Sunday’s showdown.
