Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to ease to a “routine win” against Stoke City at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The Red Devils are looking to record back to back victories in the Premier League for the first time since 17 December following successive wins against West Brom and Bournemouth.

Manchester United are looking to cement their top-four challenge following a tricky festive schedule which saw Jose Mourinho’s side draw with Leicester City, Burnley and Southampton.

The 20-time English champions will take on a Stoke side that haven’t won their last three Premier League games and sacked their manager Mark Hughes last weekend.

Stoke suffered a surprise 2-0 loss to Coventry City in the FA Cup third round to seal Hughes’ fate and prompt speculation that Martin O’Neill could replace the Welshman at the Potters.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is tipping Manchester United to secure a straightforward win against Stoke at Old Trafford on Monday night.

“With Stoke yet to appoint a successor to Mark Hughes, I fear for them at Old Trafford,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“They’re in disarray and to get beaten at Coventry in the FA Cup was unbelievable, no disrespect to Coventry. They’re in major trouble and I see a routine win for United to maintain their top-four challenge.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League last season but the Red Devils won the FA Cup and the League Cup in Mourinho’s first season in charge.

Mourinho signed Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window.
