Jamie Redknapp warns Man United about Anthony Martial ‘gamble’
The Liverpool FC legend warns Manchester United about selling Anthony Martial
Jamie Redknapp has warned Manchester United that it would be a massive gamble to sell Anthony Martial.
The Red Devils forward produced a masterful performance in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge to silence some of his critics.
Martial scored two quick-fire goals in the second half to cancel out Antonio Rudiger’s opener before Ross Barkley netted a late equaliser.
The 22-year-old has scored three goals and has made one assist in eight Premier League appearances this season to make a solid start to his fourth season at Old Trafford.
Martial made quite the impression in his first season under Louis van Gaal after the former Lyon striker scored 17 times in all competitions.
However, Jose Mourinho’s appointment in May 2016 saw Martial suffer a slump in form and the France international has struggled to maintain consistency.
Indeed, Martial has netted 23 goals in 87 games in all competitions, often threatening to blossom into a key player before another dip in his performance level.
Mourinho hasn’t been afraid to criticise Martial during his reign at Manchester United so far, leading to speculation suggesting the winger could leave.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp believes Manchester United would ultimately regret selling Martial if the ex-AS Monaco star is sold.
“It’s very difficult, when you’re in and out of the team as a player, to get any sort of rhythm,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“We don’t know how he trains, but when you’re not playing one week to the next it’s difficult to get any real rhythm. If you’re scoring two goals at Stamford Bridge, it tells you that you are a player. He’s got to show that. He’s had a tough time, he didn’t make the World Cup squad.
“When you look at him, we should be talking about him in the same breath as the lines of Sane. He should be playing regularly, and so should [Marcus] Rashford. It would be a massive gamble to sell that boy.
“I wouldn’t want him to go anywhere else, because he could make a real fool of you. The talent he possesses, the great United wingers we’ve seen over the years, he has the talent to be as good as any of them.”
Martial became the most expensive teenager in the world when Manchester United spent £36m on the AS Monaco winger to bolster their attack.
The France star has won the League Cup, the FA Cup and the Europa League during his spell at Manchester United.
Martial has scored 40 times in 145 games in three and a half seasons at the 20-time English champions.
His goals this season have come against West Ham United and Chelsea FC in the Premier League.
