The Manchester United legend believes the Red Devils need to sign two defenders of stature
Gary Neville believes Manchester United need to sign two defenders of stature in the next transfer window.
The Red Devils failed to improve their defence with experienced signings in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Manchester United were linked with a move to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester City’s World Cup winner Harry Maguire.
The 20-time English champions signed teenager Diogo Dalot in a £17m deal from FC Porto to provide more competition at full-back.
Manchester United suffered a 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium to raise questions about their ability to challenge for the title.
The Red Devils were 2-0 down before Romelu Lukaku halved the deficit before Brighton restored their two-goal cushion.
Former Manchester United defender Neville believes the Red Devils are paying the price for their failure to sign a new defender.
“I know some of those lads and I’ve worked with them,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“I think they could operate in a really good back four, but they need one or two players of stature around them. Jose Mourinho knew that.
“Whatever the club think about not wanting to invest further in centre-backs because they’ve already got five etc, doesn’t matter. The end result is still the same. You still need a new back four, you still need new centre-backs.
“It doesn’t matter if you think you’ve spent too much money in that area, you still have to make the decision that if Toby Alderweireld or Harry Maguire are available then you’ve just got to go and get them if you are Manchester United.”
Manchester United were 2-1 winners against Leicester City at Old Trafford last weekend following goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw.
The Red Devils signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Manchester United will take on Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Monday night.
