Harry Redknapp says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will struggle to sign the quality players he needs to improve the Manchester United squad.

The Red Devils have made a disappointing start to the Premier League season following a return of eight points from their opening six games.

Manchester United have already suffered defeats by Crystal Palace and West Ham United to raise questions about their top-four credentials.

Solskjaer’s side have beaten Leicester City and Chelsea FC at Old Trafford, but they’ve also drawn with Southampton and Wolves on the road.

The Manchester United manager is currently without a recognised striker at his disposal, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford both currently sidelined.

The Red Devils opted to sell Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan in the summer, while Alexis Sanchez moved to the San Siro side on loan.

Former Spurs manager Redknapp has expressed his belief that Solskjaer will require a lot of time to rebuild Manchester United.

“It’s no good saying that you (Ole and Man United) have a five-year plan. Good luck! You don’t get a five-year plan, you get six games. If you lose five or six games off the spin, suddenly you’re in trouble – that’s how the game is,” Redknapp told BetVictor.

“Eventually (the fans could turn on Ole), if it goes on the way it is at the moment.

“However, he can only do what he can with what he’s got. He’s inherited a team that’s in decline, they’re not going forward they’re going backwards.

“People say they need five new players, where are you going to find five new players that these people are talking about? You’re not going to get Messi or Ronaldo, who’s going to sell you their best players?

“Getting the best players takes a long time, it’s like a jigsaw. For example, ‘I need a left winger’, you have a look and take your time, suddenly someone becomes available. You can’t suddenly get four or five players and build a strong new team, it’s impossible.”

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season for the second time in three campaigns.

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge back in 2013.

Solskjaer’s side will return to Europa League action on Thursday night with a trip to Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.
