Manchester United have made an £80m (€90m) offer for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to a report in Italy.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that Manchester United have launched an audacious bid to sign the Napoli centre-half.

However, the same article claims that Napoli were quick to knock back the Premier League club’s bid as the Italian side look to keep Koulibaly at Stadio San Paolo.

According to the same story, Manchester United have informed the Naples outfit that they would be willing to make an identical offer in the 2019 summer transfer window when Napoli would have more time to locate an adequate replacement.

But La Repubblica don’t expect the 2017-18 Serie A runners up to sell Koulibaly for less than £89m (€100m), which would comfortably make the Senegal international the most expensive defender in the world.

Liverpool FC centre-half Virgil van Dijk is the current holder of that accolade after the Reds signed the Netherlands international in a £75m deal from Southampton in the 2018 January transfer window.

Koulibaly has been a key player at Napoli over the past three or four seasons after the African star moved to Napoli from Genk in a £6.5m deal in the 2014 summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old has scored eight goals in 174 games for Napoli, winning the Italian Super Cup in 2014 and finishing in second place in Serie A last term.
