Kalidou Koulibaly has stated his desire to prove himself as a great defender when the Napoli defender was asked about a potential summer move following reports linking him with Manchester United.

The Senegal international has been heavily linked with a switch to Premier League side Manchester United over the past 12 months or so.

Jose Mourinho was thought to be a big admirer of the Napoli centre-half during his three and a half seasons in charge at Old Trafford.

Reports in the British media have suggested that Manchester United vice chairman Ed Woodward is still keen on a swoop for the African star.

The 27-year-old has made two assists in 21 games in Serie A this season under Maurizio Sarri’s replacement at Napoli, Carlo Ancelotti.

However, Koulibaly stressed his continued commitment to Napoli when quizzed about his future.

My future? I don’t know if I’m one of the strongest defenders. I always try to give my best,” Koulibaly told Rai Sport, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.

“Since I’m here, I always try to grow with Napoli. I have a lot of motivation to go on and I want to keep doing this.

“I am pleased that many teams follow me, but I want to demonstrate on the field that I am at the level of the greatest and I want to show it in the future.”

Koulibaly has scored eight goals in 192 games in all competitions during his four and a half seasons at the Naples outfit.

Napoli signed the Senegal international in a £6.5m deal from Belgian club Genk in the 2014 summer transfer window.

While Koulibaly represented France at youth level, the powerful centre-half has racked up 31 caps for the Senegal national team.

The Napoli star is rated as one of the best centre-halves in Italian football and is looking to be named in the Serie A team of the year for the fourth successive season.
