New Man United signing could force this player out – report
Manchester United's signing of Victor Lindelof could spell the end of Chris Smalling's Old Trafford career, say reports
Manchester United’s signing of Victor Lindelof could force Chris Smalling out of the club, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Star is reporting that Smalling’s future at Old Trafford is now up in the air after Manchester United confirmed a deal to sign Lindelof from Benfica over the weekend.
The report claims that Jose Mourinho wants to partner Lindelof with Eric Bailly in the heart of Manchester United’s defence, with Phil Jones as a back-up.
That situation could mean that Smalling is now considered to be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, and the England international could be on his way out of the club this summer.
The story claims that Mourinho has decided that Smalling is “not good enough” and the English defender is likely to leave the club this summer.
Smalling was restricted to less than 20 Premier League appearances in Mourinho’s first campaign at Old Trafford last season.
Manchester United finished sixth and won the EFL Cup and Europa League last season.
