Steve Nicol has urged Gareth Bale to remain at Real Madrid and resist the temptation to return to the Premier League with Manchester United.

The Wales international endured a difficult fourth season at The Bernabeu as the winger struggled with a spate of injury problems.

Bale wasn’t fit enough to command a starting spot in Real Madrid’s line-up for their 4-1 win against Juventus in the Champions League final in his native Wales last month.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a potential return to the Premier League amid talk of interest from Manchester United as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his attacking options this summer.

However, former Liverpool defender Nicol has urged the former PFA player of the year to stick it out at Real Madrid despite the supporters showing a lack of affection for Bale.

“I don’t think it’s time to move. The Spanish fans are used to a more cultured type of player. That’s why he gets a hard time,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

Nicol added: “There is no way he should go. Gareth Bale should stay.”

The Welsh forward has won two La Liga titles, the Champions League twice and the Copa del Rey since his £85.3m move to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

Manchester United have regularly been linked with a move to sign the Real Madrid superstar after missing out on Bale when he opted to move to the Spanish capital four seasons go.

The Red Devils have only signed Sweden defender Victor Lindelof from Portuguese champions Benfica in the summer so far.
