Arsenal star Mesut Ozil told to reject Man United

Karl-Heinz Reidle urges Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil to turn down Manchester United and secure a return to the Bundesliga

Mesut Ozil should reject the chance to join Manchester United and seal a return to the Bundesliga, according to Karl-Heinz Reidle.

The Germany international’s future has been a source of debate in recent weeks as Ozil continues to run down his current Arsenal contract with no sign of the attacking midfielder signing an extension.

The World Cup winner will be free to talk to clubs in January about a potential free transfer when the 28-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Ozil’s Arsenal team-mate Alexis Sanchez is in the same situation and while the Chile international attracted lots of interest during the summer months, the Arsenal No11 was linked with few clubs.

However, interest appears to have increased in the former Real Madrid midfielder over the past couple of weeks as the rumour mill linked Ozil with a controversial switch to Manchester United or a move to cash-rich Serie A side Inter Milan.

Ozil wouldn’t be the first Arsenal player to swap The Emirates for Old Trafford after former Gunners captain Robin van Persie moved to Manchester United in a £24m deal in 2013 before winning the Premier League title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge.

However, former Liverpool striker Reidle believes Ozil should resist the lure of Manchester United and secure a return to the Bundesliga next summer.

“There’s a rumour that he goes to Manchester United. He shouldn’t do it,” Reidle told Omnisport.

“Ozil is a quality player. If you see his skills, it’s just amazing what he can do on the pitch. We would be very happy if he comes back to a club in Germany, for sure. But I’m not his agent so I don’t know where he ends up.

“Best option is if he would, from my point, come to the Bundesliga. It’s a really good option because we get another national player back in our league.

“But if he is looking only for the money, then it would be very difficult to find the same kind of money in the German league than he can find in the Premier League.”
