Romelu Lukaku has lifted the lid on his reasoning behind choosing to become a Manchester United player this summer.

The Belgium international appeared to be heading back to London amid relentless speculation linking Lukaku with a return to Chelsea.

However, Manchester United managed to spring a surprise and beat the Premier League champions to the 24-year-old’s signature.

Lukaku opted to reunite with former manager Jose Mourinho despite the Portuguese coach selling the striker to Everton from Chelsea in 2014.

The Belgian forward will be tasked with helping Manchester United to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goals after the former Sweden international netted 28 times in all competitions last term.

New Manchester United signing Lukaku explained what attracted him to a move to Old Trafford this summer.

“I would like to start by thanking Everton and the fans for the last four wonderful seasons, I have made some special friends and we have shared some amazing moments,” Lukaku told the club’s website.

“However, when Manchester United and Jose Mourinho come knocking at the door it is an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I could not turn down. You could see the fight, determination and the spirit in this team during the Europa League final and I want to become a part of that.

“I cannot wait to run out at Old Trafford in front of 75,000 fans but before that pre-season is where the hard work starts and I am looking forward to that first training session.”

Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season to finish behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the goal-scoring charts.

Manchester United qualified for the Champions League thanks to a 2-0 victory over Dutch giants Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm.

The Red Devils also lifted the EFL Cup after their first season under Jose Mourinho.
