Sid Lowe makes interesting point about Man United signing Romelu Lukaku
La Liga expert Sid Lowe doesn't believe Romelu Lukaku was always Manchester United's first-choice option in the summer transfer window
Sid Lowe has questioned whether Romelu Lukaku was always Manchester United’s first choice considering the lengths that the Red Devils want to sign Alvaro Morata this summer.
The Belgium international is poised to complete a £75m move to Manchester United from Everton in the current transfer window despite being linked with a move to Chelsea.
Indeed, Manchester United started the summer pursuing Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann before the France international committed to los Rojiblancos following their transfer ban.
The Red Devils then turned their attentions to Torino striker Andrea Belotti and Real Madrid star Alvaro Morata as alternatives to Griezmann.
Manchester United were thought to be particularly close to agreeing a deal to sign Morata but the Red Devils couldn’t meet Real Madrid’s valuation and a deal fell through.
However, the 20-time English champions have appeared to suggest that Lukaku was always their number one target and the other strikers were just smokescreens to ensure Manchester United got their man.
But La Liga expert Lowe has rubbished such talk and highlighted how far Manchester United got into negotiations with Real Madrid and Morata.
“I am intrigued to hear talk about Lukaku always being Man United’s first choice,” Lowe told ESPN FC.
“Man United have gone a long way down the road with Morata if this was a smokescreen or an alternative for their other signing. Morata thought there was a good chance with this.”
Manchester United have only signed Sweden international Victor Lindelof in a £30.7m deal from Portuguese champions Benfica.
