Sean Longstaff has admitted that he has been “flattered” by the reports linking him with a transfer to Manchester United this summer.

The Newcastle United midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to strengthen his squad ahead of his first full season in charge.

Despite the reports, there has been no official word from Manchester United as the Red Devils look to wrap up their summer transfer business.

As things stand, the 21-year-old midfielder remains as a Newcastle United player, and Longstaff has now insisted that he is purely focused on his current club despite admitting that he has been flattered by the reports linking him with a switch to Old Trafford.

Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Longstaff said: “I just keep my head down. I am just trying to get fit – that’s all I can focus on. I am still a Newcastle United player.

“I want to get back on the pitch as soon as I can. That is what I am looking forward to doing.

“I make more and more progress everyday, that’s all I look forward to. I can’t wait to get on the pitch and impress the new boss. If somebody had said to be me a year ago I would be in this position, I would probably have laughed at them.

“This time last year I was deciding whether to go to League One [Portsmouth] on loan. A year on, you are seeing your name linked with one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“For me, it is all a positive really. It gives you even more confidence. When I was in for a short amount of time people took notice of me. It is flattering but my job is at Newcastle.

“The new boss is coming in and it’s a clean slate for everybody – including me.

“I just get my head down and work on the pitch. Like anybody knows, you are no use to anybody if you aren’t fit.”

Manchester United have so far made two new signings this summer after having wrapped up deals for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

The Red Devils will be aiming to try and break back into the top four next season after they finished in sixth place and without a trophy last term.

Solskjaer’s men kick off their Premier League campaign with a testing home clash against Chelsea FC at Old Trafford on 11 August.
