Luke Shaw needs to leave Manchester United to kick-start his Premier League career, according to retired Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason.

The Manchester United left-back was substituted at half-time of the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Old Trafford last weekend.

Jose Mourinho singled out Shaw for criticism following the England international’s disappointing performance in the FA Cup last-eight clash.

The Portuguese head coach has regularly criticised the 22-year-old full-back in the media since taking over the reins from Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford in 2016.

Shaw suffered a horrendous leg break in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League back in 2015 under Van Gaal.

The England starlet has never regained his best form at Manchester United to prompt speculation linking Shaw with a move to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Mason’s former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino shared a good relationship with Shaw during the Argentinian coach’s stint in charge of Southampton before the left-back’s move to Manchester United in a £27m deal in 2015.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ The Debate about Shaw’s prospects at Manchester United, retired Tottenham midfielder Mason said:

“It is clear he isn’t a fan of Shaw as a player.

“It is vitally important for Shaw to get out and start enjoy playing games again. At the moment he looks scared on the pitch. He doesn’t have any freedom. It is difficult to have a good game if you feel like that.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table last term.
