Arsenal legend claims Mesut Ozil would have struggled at Man United
Stewart Robson believes Arsenal star Mesut Ozil wouldn't have been a success at Manchester United
Mesut Ozil would have struggled under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, according to Stewart Robson.
The Germany international put pen to paper on a new long-term deal with Arsenal on Thursday evening to end speculation about his future.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Manchester United in recent months amid ongoing uncertainty around his plans.
Ozil worked with Mourinho for three seasons at Real Madrid and the pair won the La Liga title together before his move to Arsenal.
The World Cup winner’s team-mate Alexis Sanchez completed a move to Manchester United last month in a swap deal.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan arrived as part of the agreement before Arsenal spent a club-record £56m fee on Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Former Arsenal midfielder Robson believes Ozil would have difficulties adapting to Mourinho’s style of play at Manchester United.
“If he went to Man United and he was under Mourinho he would have to do a lot more defensive work and be more disciplined,” Robson told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He can do what he wants at Arsenal. He can float around the field. He can create chances. He can look a great player on his day.
“Why would he want to change that? He is on a lot of money. He is comfortable. He will be there for quite a while.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in a £42.5m deal in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The Gunners midfielder has won three FA Cup titles in four seasons at The Emirates but hasn’t been able to get his hands on the league title.
