Manchester United fail with a bid to sign Benfica defender Ruben Dias, according to a report in Portugal

Manchester United made a bid for Benfica defender Ruben Dias as a potential alternative to Harry Maguire, according to a report in Portugal.
Portuguese media outlet O Jogo, as quoted by the Daily Mirror, is reporting that the Red Devils failed with an offer for the Benfica centre-half.
The same article states that Benfica chief Luis Felipe Vieria turned down Manchester United’s bid for the 22-year-old.
According to the same story, Manchester United’s proposal fell short of Dias’ £59.3m contract release clause.
Manchester United have been linked with a host of different centre-halves throughout the summer transfer window so far.
The Red Devils are thought to be keen on Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.
However, the Foxes want a world-record fee for a defender to sell Maguire to their Premier League rivals.
The 2016 Premier League champions are holding out for a transfer fee in the region of £80m for the former Hull City defender.
Manchester United have already spent nearly £70m on Swansea City midfielder Daniel James and Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season after a disappointing end to the 2018-19 campaign.
Manchester United haven’t won a trophy in the last two Premier League seasons.
