Lazio president Claudio Lotito has admitted that the Rome club could struggle to keep Manchester United target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic beyond the summer transfer window.

The Serbia international was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer but the Red Devils were unable to meet Lazio’s €100m (£87.4m) asking price.

And he has again been touted as a potential target for the Red Devils this summer.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thought to be looking for a new central midfielder from Ander Herrera after the Spain international moved to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

Unsurprisingly, the Red Devils have been linked with a fresh bid to sign Milinkovic-Savic in the current transfer window to bolster their midfield options.

Lazio president Lotito admitted that the Serie A outfit could find it more difficult to keep Milinkovic-Savic at the club this summer.

“We’ve created a glasshouse, where it’s understood that people can’t be forced to perform their roles in an environment where they feel cramped,” Lotito told Corriere dello Sport.

“Milinkovic has shown sincerity and responsibility, so that isn’t the case with him. He feels good here.

“Last year I managed to resist the assaults of other clubs, but this year I’d have fewer weapons if a different solution was proposed to the player. “Let’s say that I used up some of my weapons last year.”

Manchester United club-record signing Paul Pogba has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid or Juventus in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have already signed Wales international Daniel James in an £18m deal from Championship side Swansea City this summer.

Manchester United spent £50m on England Under-21 international Aaron Wan-Bissaka after the full-back swapped Crystal Palace for Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions haven’t won the a major trophy in the past two seasons under Jose Mourinho or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
