Manchester United have been in touch with Tottenham Hotspur over a deal to sign Toby Alderweireld, reporter Dharmesh Sheth confirmed.
Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen to sign the Belgium international in the current transfer window to bolster their defence.
The World Cup star has been a huge hit in the Premier League over the past few seasons since his move from Atletico Madrid un 2015.
Alderweireld is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2018-19 season unless Spurs decide to activate a clause in his contract.
Spurs have the option to extend Alderweireld’s deal by an extra 12 months but the Belgian centre-half will be available to sign for £25m.
However, Manchester United have been linked with Leicester City defender Harry Maguire and FC Barcelona centre-half Yerry Mina.
Sky Sports News reporter Sheth revealed that Manchester United have held discussions with Spurs over a deal.
“We are told Man United are still in touch with Spurs about Alderwerield but nothing will happen until the price is reduced,” Sheth told the Transfer Talk podcast.
Manchester United have signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, FC Porto full-back Diogo Dalot and veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant.
The Red Devils finished in second place in the Premier League table last term.
