Manchester United will struggle to find a world-class striker who is willing to move to Old Trafford, Danny Murphy has claimed.

Romelu Lukaku is facing an uncertain future at the 20-time English champions after falling behind Marcus Rashford in the pecking order.

The England striker has been in brilliant form following a return of six goals in 12 games since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United have been linked with a potential swoop to sign Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi in the summer.

The Argentina international has fallen out with his Inter bosses to fuel speculation surrounding his future at the San Siro outfit.

However, Icardi would have to force his way into the Manchester United team most likely at the expense of Rashford, who is currently starting in a central role.

Former Liverpool FC and Spurs midfielder Murphy suggested that Icardi would be reluctant to move to Manchester United only to sit on the bench.

“Icardi is a proven goal scorer and he would continue to score goals in the Premier League, there’s no doubt about that,” Murphy told Sporting Bet.

“However, I don’t see him joining Manchester United unless they make him the main man and play him every week.

“Similar to the situation we might see unfolding with Lukaku and we do find at Tottenham with Harry Kane, Manchester United may struggle to sign a world-class striker because any potential signing will be eyeing Rashford as their competition and they don’t want to sit on the bench.”

Manchester United will be eager to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool FC with some shrewd investments in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils didn’t make any signings in January following the appointment of Solskjaer as interim boss for the remainder of the campaign.

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
