Manchester United missed out on the chance to sign Matthijs de Ligt in a cut-price deal last summer after the Premier League clubs were told that the Dutch defender would become “fat”, according to a report in England.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that Manchester United are eager to sign a new centre-half this summer to bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence ahead of his first full season in charge at Old Trafford.
The same article states that the club’s Dutch scout Marcel Brand recommended the 19-year-old to the 20-time English champions following De Ligt’s impressive performances for Ajax.
However, the Daily Mirror go on to claim that Brand warned Manchester United about De Ligt’s father being overweight and the possibility the Ajax star could go the same way.
The story goes on to say Jose Mourinho wanted to sign De Ligt last summer but Manchester United vetoed a move to sign the Ajax star due to concerns about his future weight.
The Daily Mirror report reveals that De Ligt is now attracting interest from a host of top clubs in European football.
