Liverpool FC midfielder James Milner admits he'll be supporting Manchester United in Wednesday's derby clash
James Milner has admitted that he’ll be supporting Manchester United for the first time in his career in Wednesday night’s Merseyside derby.
The former England international scored Liverpool FC’s second goal from the penalty spot in a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City in the Welsh capital on Sunday.
Liverpool FC’s comfortable win hoisted Jurgen Klopp’s side back above Manchester City with a two-point cushion ahead of the Manchester derby.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side will reclaim top spot with three games to go if Manchester City can beat their bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Milner spent five seasons at Etihad Stadium and won the Premier League twice under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini.
However, the former England international will have to discard any affection for Manchester City given the intensity of this season’s Premier League title race.
And Milner admitted that he is in the unique position where the Liverpool FC vice-captain will be supporting Manchester United in the derby on Wednesday night.
“[For the] first time in my life,” Milner told Sky Sports when asked if he will be supporting Man United.
“But I won’t be watching. It’s a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal.
“I can’t do anything about it. I’ll maybe put my phone away for a few hours and check it after. I’ve no idea what I’ll do, maybe go out for some food.”
Liverpool FC are looking to win their first Premier League title this season, having previously finished in second place on three different occasions.
The Reds will take on La Liga giants FC Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals after a 6-1 aggregate win over FC Porto in the last eight.
