John Terry hailed a “great point” for Chelsea after the Blues held Manchester United to a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

The visitors had the best of the early chances as Brazil international Oscar tested United goalkeeper David De Gea with a couple of attempts.

Blues target Wayne Rooney made his first Red Devils start of the campaign, and the England striker repaid his manager’s faith with an industrious
performance.

In the second half, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck had the best of the home side’s opportunities, while Frank Lampard was fortunate to avoid punishment for a handball in Petr Cech’s area.

“Neither side had too many great chances to win the game,” Terry told Sky Sports.

“It’s obviously a great point for us away from home at a tough place to come. It’s out of the way and we move on now.”

Lampard added: “It’s tense. People talk about big decider games but it’s early on in the season and neither side wants to lose. It was a bit of stalemate in those terms.

“We know the threat that they pose and we worked hard to stop them, while they worked hard to stop us.”

When asked about the incident which saw Lampard block Cleverley’s shot with his arm in the Chelsea area, the midfielder added: “I was only worried because of modern day football.

“For me, it wasn’t a penalty. When you’re challenging for the ball and you’re half a yard away, what can you do?

“I think it’s common sense from referees when it’s that close quarters, not to give it.”
