Juan Mata believes Chelsea deserve to be in the Champions League next season after the Blues secured a narrow win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Chelsea were handed a fortuitous winner when Mata’s shot was deflected past United’s second-choice goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard by defender Phil Jones with three minutes remaining.

Moments later, Rafael da Silva was issued with a straight red card for a petulant kick on Chelsea defender David Luiz and the Blues held firm to move point clear of Arsenal and into third place.

“It’s a very important victory,” Mata told Sky Sports. “It was like a final.

“We have another big game this week and we will try and win it to be a bit closer to our aim, which third position.”

He added: “We have three more games to play in the Premier League. The only thing we want is to win as many as we can because Chelsea deserves to play in the Champions League next season. I think we can do it.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech admitted the west London side’s victory will change their approach to the top-four showdown with Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

“We have a massive game on Wednesday [against fifth-placed Tottenham], we are three points above them and we will leave them behind if we win,” he added.

“This win changes preparations for that game. Today it was a strange game because we knew we needed to defend and control the game – we couldn’t commit too many people forward. You could see how much it meant to us.

“I found the pace of the game a bit slower than usual but we did really well to come here and win.”
