Sir Alex Ferguson was less than pleased with referee Howard Webb’s performance after Chelsea snatched victory at Manchester United.

Juan Mata’s shot was deflected in off Phil Jones in the 87th minute, before Rafael Da Silva was sent off for kicking out at David Luiz, as the visitors sealed a win which hoists them up into third place in the table.

Ferguson felt Webb was affected by Chelsea players during the game, and claimed that Rafael was elbowed twice by Luiz before his 89th-minute dismissal.

“There was no real edge to the game and I think Chelsea deserved to win,” Ferguson told Sky Sports. “Unfortunately [it was] controversial. It always is when you play Chelsea – quite a lot of times. But we can’t complain, we didn’t play well enough.

“I don’t think it was a foul [by Ramires on Wayne Rooney in the build-up to Chelsea’s winner] but we weren’t getting anything from the referee anyway. It was a bit of a lucky goal.

“I can’t make any excuses in terms of our performance. Certainly the referee’s decisions went against us a lot I thought.

“They [Chelsea] surrounded the referee all day, four or five players all the time, and I think that affected [Webb].

“[Rafael] was elbowed and he retaliated. That always happens: the player who retaliates always gets the bigger penalty.

“It’s quite clear that Luiz elbowed him twice actually.

“It’s rash, he [Rafael] is a young lad and he should know better – retaliation never works.

“The referee hasn’t even seen it. He’s gone with the fact that Luiz has rolled about on the floor and I think that’s convinced him it was a red card.”

Manchester United travel to Swansea City in their next Premier League game on 12 May.
