Man United 0 Liverpool 3: David Moyes refuses to rule out top-four finish
Man United 0 Liverpool 3: David Moyes refuses to admit that the Red Devils can't finish in the top four this season
David Moyes refused to rule Manchester United out of the race for a top-four finish after Liverpool were emphatic winners at Old Trafford.
Reds captain Steven Gerrard made the breakthrough in the 34th minute from the penalty spot after Rafael da Silva was adjudged to have handled the ball in David De Gea’s penalty area.
The 33-year-old scored his second spot-kick in the 46th minute after Phil Jones was penalised for hauling Joe Allen down but missed his third penalty effort following Nemanja Vidic’s red card for a foul on Daniel Sturridge.
I thought there was not a great deal in it at half time. We had just started to play a bit better towards the end of the first half
However, the England striker and Luis Suarez combined in 84th minute as the Uruguayan scored his 25th Premier League goal of the season.
“It looks like we are long way off it [the top four], we are well aware of that but we are going to keep fighting,” Moyes told BBC Sport.
Despite Liverpool’s margin of victory, Moyes felt United were competitive in the north-west derby before half-time.
“I thought there was not a great deal in it at half time. We had just started to play a bit better towards the end of the first half,” Moyes added.
“It was important we came out in the second half and got a goal back but instead we gave one away and that made it very difficult for us.
“I don’t think I had even got seated in the dugout when we gave it away. We were going for it but it always left us open to a counter.”
